The Echo of Geometry: Mudéjar Transcendence and the Legacy of La Mejorada

It was the year 1409 when the Monastery of La Mejorada, in Valladolid, was inhabited by the Order of Saint Jerome. Within its walls, erected for seclusion and contemplation, flourished one of the most extraordinary jewels of Iberian architecture: a Mudéjar chapel that has held the title of National Monument since 1931. But what is Mudéjar art if not the eternal embrace between two worlds? It is the distillation of aesthetics, mathematics, and craftsmanship of Islamic heritage, masterfully applied by Arab and Moorish hands in service of a new cultural reality on the Iberian Peninsula.

In my new work, ‘Mudéjar Transcendence,’ I have sought to capture and reinterpret that temporal and spiritual crossroads. When contemplating the chapel’s original geometric structure, one cannot help but feel a profound reverence for those who carved the wood and molded the plaster. The sacred geometry that unfolds in this work is by no means arbitrary; each eight-pointed star, each finely interwoven polygon, functions as a word within a universal visual language that transcends dogma. It represents the prevailing cosmic order, the infinitude of creation, and the intimate interconnectedness of all things. The ribbons that crisscross above and below—forming a continuous and uninterrupted fabric—speak to us of the continuity of life and the enduring nature of knowledge throughout the ages.

This piece proposes a mystical journey. It is a window that allows us to glimpse a historical era where art served as the ultimate bridge to the transcendent. By adapting and transforming this ancient pattern to the tools and aesthetics of our present, my primary intention is for that same spiritual vibration to permeate contemporary spaces. I seek to offer a powerful visual refuge that invites introspection and brings a geometric serenity amidst modern chaos.

From a technical and design perspective, ‘Mudéjar Transcendence’ has presented a formidable challenge: translating the architectural volumes onto the two-dimensional plane while ensuring that their intrinsic sense of depth is not lost. The composition is articulated on a rigorous mathematical foundation, strictly adhering to the precepts of Hispano-Muslim interlacing patterns. I have employed state-of-the-art digital design tools to ensure that the golden ratio and the complex radial symmetries remain immaculate. This clean linework pays homage to the perfection that the ancient artisans tirelessly pursued, but which today the vector environment allows us to execute with pinpoint accuracy.

Color is undoubtedly a central and distinguishing element in this reinterpretation. Instead of simply reproducing the original earthy tones of wood or aged plaster from the period, I have endowed the work with a bold, vibrant, and decidedly contemporary color palette. Luminous turquoises and golden ochres interact dynamically with the depths of dark blues and vibrant crimson accents. This careful selection of pigments not only injects an overwhelming vitality into the geometry but, through meticulous work with digital light, gradients, and shadows, generates a convincing optical illusion of bas-relief. The work seems to come alive, breathe, and project itself beyond its own frame, defying the flat nature of the medium that supports it.
